Onboard Monitoring System for Bogies and Tracks

The maintenance of vehicles and railway facilities involves enormous costs to ensure safe and comfortable travel, and stable operation of rolling stock.
To minimize this cost, KHI is developing an onboard system by effectively applying ICT and IoT technology.
For instance, we are developing a technology to employ sensitive sensors to constantly monitor abnormal vibrations and rises in temperature during the travel of in-service vehicles with the aim of extending the cycle of regular bogie maintenance and to simplify maintenance work.
Currently, abnormalities of rail fasteners on railway tracks are spotted by visual checks conducted on foot. KHI is developing a technology to automatically determine if rail fasteners are working properly based on images taken by cameras installed on the bottom of the vehicle.
To further streamline the maintenance, we will take our diagnosis technology to the next level based on big data obtained for a larger number of monitored items.
