Kawasaki Heavy Industries’ Steam Turbines:
High Efficiency and Stable Operation
Since 1956, we have been manufacturing steam turbines at our factory in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture. We have not only provided solutions to clients in Japan but also from around the world including Asia (e.g. South Korea, Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia), South America (e.g. Brazil), and Africa.
By completing the entire process—from product development to manufacturing—within our company, we ensure optimal and stable performance of our steam turbines. Having full control over our technology and designs allows us to accommodate detailed requests from clients and swiftly address any technical issues that may occur after delivery.
We strive to create a design tailored to each client. We can optimize the pre-existing equipment and functions of our steam turbines to align with your demands.
We offer high-efficiency steam turbines from a multifaceted perspective. In addition to maximizing power generation efficiency, we also assess the supply balance of electricity and steam, which reduces the overall operational costs for your facilities.
Our turbines are known for their high operational uptime, with minimal disruptions aside from scheduled maintenance. They are also designed for longevity, with some turbines operating for over 60 years.
We have developed a graphical interface for our control panels, which can be operated intuitively via touchscreen. This interface can also be customized to meet your specific demands.

As our steam turbines are fully developed in-house, we can ensure the availability of necessary parts at all times. We also dispatch skilled technical advisors to provide appropriate and comprehensive maintenance plans to ensure stable operation at your facilities.

Paper Mills
Delivered to | : | Nippon Paper Industries Co., Ltd.’s Soka Mill / Soka, Saitama Prefecture |
Details | : | 5.5 MW steam turbine generator × 1 (Operation planned for 2025) |
Link
This order was for a replacement of the extraction-condensing turbine system that we delivered in 2002, with an extraction back-pressure system. This allows all the exhaust steam from the turbine to be used in the papermaking process of the mill, therefore creating an optimized balance of heat and electric energy. As the steam can also be supplied to other Nippon Paper Industries’ mills nearby, it would help energy conservation and decarbonization efforts of the company as a whole.
Waste-to-Energy Facilities

Details | : | 28 MW steam turbine generator × 1 (Delivered 2023) |
Link
This order was to upgrade the steam turbine delivered by our company in 2000, which generates electricity using heat from the incineration of waste collected from households and businesses. The upgrade improved power generation efficiency, leading to an increase in surplus energy and reduction in the company’s carbon footprint.
Biomass Power Plants
Delivered to | : | EF-ON SHINGU INC.’s woody biomass power plant / Shingu, Wakayama Prefecture |
Details | : | 18 MW steam turbine generator × 1 (In operation since 2022) |

We installed our steam turbine in a biomass power plant that uses wood chips as fuel. We received the order from EBARA Environmental Plant Co., Ltd., which makes it the sixth steam turbine supplied by our company to their biomass power plants. This power plant utilizes a feed-in-tariff scheme and supplies the generated electricity to consumers through transmission system operators.
Types of Steam Turbines for Power Generation
We offer steam turbines catered to a wide range of applications. Upon consultation, we will propose the best solution based on your current equipment and needs.
If You are Looking to
Supply PowerCondensing Steam Turbine
Condensing turbines increase steam pressure to high vacuum levels, allowing for a greater power output. This system can be divided into two types: the direct coupled type suitable for large steam volume flows and the reduction-gear coupled type for a more compact design.
[Power Output] Reduction-gear coupled: 10MW–40MW / Direct coupled: 20MW–180MW
[Inlet Steam Pressure] 0.2MPaG–14MPaG
[Inlet Steam Temperature] Up to 566℃

Reheat Steam Turbine
Reheat turbine uses the steam that has gone through the turbine and reheats it in the boiler to be used again. This process can improve power generation efficiency and helps reduce the effects of moisture loss.
[Power Output] Up to 170MW
[Inlet Steam Pressure] Up to 17MPaG
[Inlet Steam Temperature] Up to 600℃

If You are Looking to
Supply Both Power and SteamExtraction-Condensing Steam Turbine
The extraction-condensing system can extract steam at the intermediate stage of the turbine. We can offer the direct coupled type or reduction-gear coupled type depending on the desired power output. Additionally, low-pressure steam can also be sent into the turbine at the intermediate section, therefore utilizing the surplus steam for additional power. The number and position of the extraction points on the turbine can be adjusted.
[Power Output] Reduction-gear coupled: 10MW–40MW / Direct coupled: 20MW–180MW
[Inlet Steam Pressure] 0.2MPaG–14MPaG
[Inlet Steam Temperature] Up to 566℃

Extraction Back-Pressure Steam Turbine
The extraction back-pressure system prioritizes the use of steam over generating power. It not only utilizes the exhaust steam, but it also allows steam to be extracted and pressure levels to be adjusted from multiple areas in the intermediate section of the turbine. You can choose between a direct coupled type optimized for high power output or a reduction-gear coupled type for a compact design.
[Power Output] Reduction-gear coupled: 10MW–40MW / Direct coupled: 20MW–90MW
[Inlet Steam Pressure] 0.2MPaG–14MPaG
[Inlet Steam Temperature] Up to 566℃

Technology Exclusive to Kawasaki Heavy Industries
We have continued to innovate our technology to improve the solutions we have to offer.
Improving Reaction Steam Turbines via Automatic Optimization Algorithms

We utilize automatic optimization algorithms to calculate the most ideal form of turbine blades when developing reaction steam turbines. This approach has allowed us to discover blade shapes that can maximize generation efficiency while meeting the required conditions for component strength and other key factors, leading to an approximately 0.6-point increase of productivity in each procedure in comparison to previous development practices. In addition, the algorithm significantly reduces the time and effort spent repetitively on design, assessment and redesign. As a result, we are now able to develop and improve our steam turbines much faster than previously possible.
Boosting the Efficiency of Last Stage Low Pressure Turbine Blades via Automatic Optimization Algorithms

The last stage low pressure turbine blades are key components that determine the overall quality of steam turbines. They are also parts that experience some of the most significant stress in a steam turbine, meaning strict requirements need clearing to make the blades more efficient. By introducing automatic optimization algorithms to low pressure turbine blade development, the procedure saw a 1.0-point increase in productivity. Furthermore, the algorithm reduced the time and effort spent on calculating the most optimal blade shape, resulting in improved productivity in the development and improvement processes.
