Steam Turbine Generator Sets for Oil Refinery in the Philippines Delivered
Mar. 31, 2023
Tokyo, March 31, 2023 — Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. announced today that it has delivered two steam turbine generator sets to the Filipino petrochemical company, Petron Corporation. The steam turbine sets (which actually began operations in September 2022) were installed for an off-grid power generation project at Bataan Refinery in Luzon, the Philippines, to supply power and heat to the refinery.
Kawasaki received the order for these steam turbine sets from Formosa Heavy Industries Corporation, which had won the refinery project from Petron. Kawasaki was responsible for manufacturing two 22.2MW back-pressure extraction steam turbine generator sets*1 (key components of the generation system) at Kobe Works in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, and for the technical advice of installation and test run.
The refinery already had four units of the 35MW extraction-condensing*2 steam turbine generator, which Kawasaki had delivered between 2011 and 2013, and the newly delivered steam turbines are being operated in conjunction with them. With the addition of these two units, the six steam turbine generators now provide a steady supply of power and heat, contributing to the stable operation of the refinery and saving energy, thanks to improved thermal efficiency.
Ever since launching production of steam turbines for power generation began in 1956, Kawasaki has delivered a variety of steam turbines, not only to conventional power companies in Japan and overseas, but also to operators of biomass power plants and waste incineration plants, and to steel manufacturers, petrochemical companies, and others which require off-grid power generation systems are required. Moving forward, Kawasaki is committed to designing more sophisticated turbine technologies and improving plant engineering capabilities in order to precisely meet diverse market needs, and to ensure a stable supply of energy, reduce environmental footprints, and thus contribute to the realization of a low-carbon/decarbonized society.
*1 | A turbine that supplies two different types of steam, one through a back-pressure system, in which exhaust [steam] from the turbine is reused in other plant operations, and another through an extraction system, in which a portion of the steam produced is extracted at an intermediate stage, providing steam at a pressure appropriate for other plant operations. The first system is generally used for steam turbine generators at plants which require a large quantity of steam. |
*2 | In the condensing system, the exhaust (steam) from the steam turbine is cooled (condensed) by the condenser to increase the steam turbine’s overall output. In general, this system is used for steam turbine generators at plants which require a large amount of electricity. |
