Tokyo, April 17, 2026 — Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. announced today that it has commenced mass production of the ERUJ, a joystick-type electric remote control unit used to control the operation of construction machinery such as hydraulic excavators.

Since developing the joystick-type electric remote control unit— a core device responsible for the control functions of construction machinery— in the late 1980s, Kawasaki has supplied approximately 700,000 units to domestic and global construction machinery manufacturers. Drawing on its long-standing expertise in electric control technology, Kawasaki developed this product with the goal of further enhancing the added value and quality of construction machinery. Based on a needs analysis conducted through interviews with construction machinery manufacturers that use the predecessor product*, this product maintains the “compact design” that is a hallmark of Kawasaki’s electric remote control units—a feature that enables greater flexibility in cab layout in construction machinery. At the same time, it offers improved performance compared with the predecessor product, particularly in durability and maintainability.

Features of This Product

1) Superior Durability for Long-Term, Stable Operation

•     A newly designed mechanism for converting the operator’s joystick input into electrical output reduces the effect of mechanical component wear, which occurs with continued use, on the electrical output, thereby improving the overall durability of the electric remote control unit.
•     The electrical components have an ingress protection rating equivalent to IP67 for water and dust resistance, enabling stable operation even in harsh environments.

2) High Maintainability to Reduce Equipment Downtime and Repair Costs

•     An easy-to-disassemble and reassemble design enables component-level repairs that were not possible with the predecessor product. This not only helps increase equipment uptime by reducing downtime in the event of a failure, but also helps lower repair costs.
Moving forward, Kawasaki will continue to leverage its accumulated technological strengths and proven track record to improve product value, contributing to a better quality of life for people through enhanced safety and productivity in construction and infrastructure operations.
