310MW CCPP Delivered to Brazilian Independent Power Producer

Kawasaki has delivered a 310MW combined cycle power plant (CCPP) to CGT Fortaleza S.A., a Brazilian independent power producer (IPP). Kawasaki was awarded the full turnkey contract in January 2002 with Mitsui & Co., Ltd.

Composed of two 100MW gas turbines (ALSTOM GT11N2) that run on natural gas, two heat recovery boilers and a 110MW steam turbine, the CCPP was constructed in Fortaleza, Ceará State, in northeastern Brazil. The GT11N2 gas turbines were packaged at Kawasaki’s Kobe Works and shipped to Brazil, following a production agreement with ALSTOM.

Brazil has been suffering from chronic power shortages due to increased power use accompanying economic growth and reduced hydropower supplies caused by water shortages. Demand is expected to increase for large-scale power plants for IPPs and private power plants run by regional governments and companies. The new CCPP in Fortaleza will be supplying power to industrial plants and homes in Ceará State through a power distribution company, COELCE.
