Kawasaki Rail Car Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (wholly-owned subsidiary of Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd.) announced that Kawasaki Rail Car, Inc. (KRC), its U.S. subsidiary based in Yonkers, New York, has been approved by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s (MTA) New York City Transit (NYCT * ) for the award of an order for 378 new generation “B” Division subway cars, known as the R268 series. The order is worth approximately $1.5 billion (220 billion Japanese yen).

The R268 subway cars will be complexly manufactured at its facilities in the United States and are scheduled to be delivered to NYCT from 2028 through 2030.

Kawasaki has successfully delivered over 2,900 cars to NYCT since receiving its first contract order in 1982 for the R62 subway cars.

The R268 cars are being introduced as a part of NYCT’s efforts to modernize and improve reliability and service for the people of New York. The cars will be equipped with security cameras, LED lighting, digital displays and wider doors, enabling passengers to enter and exit the trains more smoothly, thus reducing the dwell time at the station.

Kawasaki has established a history of providing quality high-tech vehicles with enhanced performance and reliability, earning credibility with the American rolling stock industry which contributed to the NYCT’s selection as the contractor of the R268 subway cars.

Kawasaki will continue to develop its cutting-edge technology and contribute to the expansion of environmentally friendly modes of transportation in the U.S. market and around the world.
