Tokyo, March 16, 2018 — Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. announced today the delivery of a waste treatment facility to Kusatsu City, Shiga Prefecture, and also the start of the facility's operation and management by Green Park Kusatsu Co., Ltd., a special-purpose company represented by Kawasaki, for the next 15 years.

This treatment center, designed and built by Kawasaki, comprises a waste-heat recovery facility (capable of processing 127 tons per day) and a recycling center (capable of processing 13.8 tons per day). The waste-heat recovery facility employs the Kawasaki Advanced Stoker System, which is based on the company's proprietary parallel-flow incinerator configuration. The facility uses bag filters, a flue gas recirculation system, and other equipment and technologies to achieve sophisticated flue gas processing that reduces the environmental load. On top of that, each of the incinerators combines high-temperature, high-pressure boilers and condensing steam turbines for high-efficiency electric power generation (maximum output: 3,100 kW), which will supply all the electricity the facility needs with surplus power left over to sell. The recycling center takes in and processes bulky refuse, shredded solid waste and recyclable waste, separating out and recovering iron, aluminum and other materials of value which are then reused as raw materials.

Because this treatment facility is located in a satoyama area (rural, urban-outskirt area), a strong emphasis has been placed on achieving harmony with the surrounding city and environment.
The facility was designed so that its external appearance blends in well with the surrounding green space.

Kawasaki boasts a wide range of waste treatment technologies including stoker incinerators, recycling centers, combined waste incineration and biogas recovery facilities, and plants for producing carbonized fuel from municipal solid waste. The company has built a total of 174 waste incineration facilities (with a combined waste processing capacity of roughly 390,000 tons per day) in Japan and other parts of the world. Kawasaki will continue to develop innovations and deliver products in response to increasingly diverse environmental problems and societal needs.
