LTA Singapore Orders 12 MRT Trains (72 cars) for North-South/East-West Lines

Tokyo, September 22 — Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd., Kawasaki Heavy Industries (Singapore) Pte. Ltd. (KHI-SIN) and CRRC Qingdao Sifang Co., Ltd. (CRRC Sifang) have been jointly awarded an approximately 137 million SGD contract for the supply of MRT 12 trains (72 cars) from Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Singapore.
Kawasaki will be in charge of the overall project management, design, manufacture of bogie and procurement of major components, CRRC Sifang will be in charge of manufacture of carbody, final fitting/assembly of complete cars and factory testing, and KHI-SIN will be in charge of on-shore works including delivery of complete cars to depot and testing and commissioning at site.
LTA is implementing the master plan to double the rail network (from 178km to 360km) by 2030 and is undergoing to build new lines and to extend and deploy new trains to the existing lines for enhancement of passenger amenity and for relief of crowding during peak hours.
The new trains awarded this time will be handed-over to LTA from 2018 through 2019, and will be deployed to North-South and East-West Lines.
Kawasaki, including the joint contracts with CRC Sifang, has been awarded by LTA for supplying more than 1,300 MRT cars accumulatively to date.
The history of cooperation between Kawasaki and CRRC Sifang commenced in 1985, when they signed a friendship agreement. Since then, the two companies have built up the solid track record within China, including joint contracts of linear motor MRT trains for Guangzhou Metro Line 4 and 5 and of high-speed trains from the Ministry of Railways of China. By collaboration of Kawasaki’s abundant experience in overseas projects and extensive expertise of MRT trains and CRRC Sifang’s large production capacity, Kawasaki and CRRC Sifang supplied 210 cars (35 trains) of MRT trains to LTA by 2014.
