Plant & Infrastructure Company

Tatsuya Watanabe
President,
Plant & Infrastructure Company

Kawasaki not only offers a wide range of industrial plants to process cement, chemicals, nonferrous metals, and more, but also energy and environmental protection facilities, including boilers and waste incinerators, from design to sale. It also manufactures ultra low temperature tanks for LNG and Liquefied hydrogen, as well as shield machines for tunneling in underground construction projects. Energy efficient, resource efficient, and low environmental impact-these are the keywords that guide Kawasaki as it continues to expand its business into the fields of energy, societal infrastructure, and environmental protection.

Kawasaki Heavy Industries Group's plant business

Plant & Infrastructure Company covers the industrial plant business to produce cement, chemical products, and non-ferrous metals, the energy business exemplified by the LNG tank and boiler, and the environment business such as waste incineration, and is well represented as "a company with many drawers." Our businesses are provided by using a single drawer or by combining multiple drawers depending on what is required by customers. That is, functions required for us vary from time to time and customer to customer, and our role is to catch them appropriately and provide customer values and social values in accordance with the times.
Among our products, plants are overwhelmingly big and their construction is "work which remains on the map." It is my pleasure to view plants I was involved in on Google Earth. This means that my work has been used by the customer for a long period of time, and I feel further pleased.

Future prospect and issues

The hydrogen energy supply chain project currently promoted by the Kawasaki Heavy Industries Group is attracting significant attention as a new energy infrastructure and it is feasible for us by utilizing our own technologies; extremely low temperature piping technology is applicable to liquefaction of hydrogen, the advanced heat insulation technology used for the LNG tank is applicable to the liquefied hydrogen tank, and the process technologies such as the powder technology and high-temperature gasification are applicable to efficient generation of hydrogen from lignite which is the raw material.
In order to launch a new business based on advanced technologies, it is important to continuously foster talents and build a trusted organization. I will focus on on-the-job training and off-the-job training so that young talents may take over knowledge from their superiors accumulated through projects and development, and establish an environment where all of the members can pursue their studies to make the most use of their abilities.

My experience and expectation to employees

I was assigned to the cement plant department when I joined the company, and was sent to the cement plant site in Libya for a long term next year. At that time, there was no entertainment there and just making a call required me to wait for several hours. It was a both physically and mentally suffering environment for me. Therefore, I was all the more happy when the plant had been completed and the furnace was fired and I saw pleasant faces of the customers. That first experience of "completing a product and getting thanks from the customer" has been my motive force behind my job scenes.
The plant construction site is an exciting place where people in various positions such as customers and partners argue heatedly to build a better plant, and it is my starting point and therefore I am still field-oriented. I hope all the employees including those of common departments always be conscious of who your customer is and how you can build a better plant, and work while drawing the image of the final form of your own project.
