Disaster Support with Group Resources

Support in the Area Devastated by the Great East Japan Earthquake

On March 11, 2011, eastern Japan was rocked by an earthquake of unprecedented force. The Group jumped into action immediately with assistance geared to demand in the disaster area. We knew what to do because we had experienced the devastation caused by the Great Hanshin Earthquake in 1995 in Kobe, where KHI is based.
On March 14, the decision was made to donate ¥100 million and relief supplies—Kawasaki-brand motorcycles D-TRACKER X and D-TRACKER 125, KCM-made wheel loaders, and an EarthTechnica-made crushing machine—worth ¥100 million, for a total contribution of ¥200 million.

In March 2014, KHI donated a Jet Ski STX-15F and trailer to the city of Miyako, in Iwate Prefecture, and another jet ski and trailer to the town of Yamada, also in Iwate Prefecture, as well as a third set to the town of Onagawa, in Miyagi Prefecture, to support recovery in the region and help prepare for future emergencies. We plan to continue this kind of support in the area devastated by the March 2011 disasters.

We dispatched two helicopters manufactured and owned by the KHI Group to Hyogo Prefecture and Kobe City free of charge to help transport supplies. We have also offered maintenance and inspection services for fire and disaster prevention helicopters manufactured by us and owned by local governments for use in earthquake disaster measures.

We loaned ten motorcycles to Hyogo Prefecture and dispatched over 20 riders to support communication and distribute supplies. We also loaned 35 motorcycles to the Hyogo Prefecture Police.

Kobe Head Office and various works in Hyogo Prefecture

We opened bathhouses of dormitories and health facilities under the control of each office for people in the region to use. (About 22,000 people used them over three months.) Some works additionally provided electricity using emergency generators and also distributed groundwater.

We distributed relief supplies such as bedding and heaters stored at works and drinking water and emergency provisions provided by other companies to the regional disaster headquarters and shelters.
Starting from the day after the earthquake, the Sakaide Works (Kagawa Prefecture) provided relief supplies such as water and food to the Kobe Works and also dispatched support personnel to relieve surrounding areas.

Other Disasters

Help in the Wake of Philippines’ Typhoon

In November 2013, Typhoon Haiyan tore through the Philippines and caused catastrophic damage and major loss of life.
The KHI Group’s relief package—donations equivalent to ¥13.8 million—included ¥10 million in relief funds to help the people and communities affected by the typhoon as well as 10 KLX150 and 10 Bajaj CT100 Kawasaki-brand motorcycles to transport emergency supplies.
Kawasaki Motors (Phils.) Corporation, which manufactures and sells Kawasaki motorcycles in the Philippines, also provided support in the affected area. The company encouraged employees to get involved in relief efforts and implemented a program at service centers in the city of Tacloban to repair damaged motorcycles at no cost to customers.
The ring of support extended to the United States, where employees at Kawasaki Motors Corp., U.S.A., volunteered their time to prepare food packages for about 150,000 people. Their goal was to have these emergency rations get to people in the typhoonstricken area as quickly as possible, and the entire process from sorting to boxing was completed in an amazingly short time, thanks to awesome teamwork from everyone involved.

Support for victims of the flood (Thailand)

Kawasaki Motors Enterprise (Thailand) Co.,Ltd. (KMT), the local manufacturing and marketing base for Kawasaki-brand motorcycles in Thailand, was not directly affected by the severe floods that inundated Thailand in autumn of 2011.
The KHI Group supported relief and recovery efforts with cash donations of 4 million baht (about ¥10 million) to the Thai Red Cross and 4 million baht (about ¥10 million) to the Thailand Board of Investment, and also equipment, notably 10 Kawasaki MULETM utility vehicles, for a total donation value of ¥30 million.
A total of 40 Kawasaki motorcycle-riding volunteers took advantage of the mobility afforded by motorcycles to expedite relief efforts to the people affected by this disaster. In addition to providing spare parts, oil, gasoline and other motorcycle-related necessities at no cost, KMT dispatched three repair specialists to the area to support the volunteers riding through the flooded region.
For customers affected by the floods, KMT undertook free motorcycle repairs and offered discounts on spare parts.
