Kawasaki Awarded Contract to Supply the World’s Largest-Scale WHRPG System for South Korean Cement Plant

Sep. 27, 2016

Tokyo, September 27, 2016 - Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. announced today that it was awarded a contract to supply a waste heat recovery power generation (WHRPG) system to be constructed at the Donghae Plant of Ssangyong Cement Industrial Co., Ltd, South Korea's largest cement manufacturer. With an output of 43.5 MW, this system will have the highest power generation capacity of any such system in the world. It is scheduled to begin operations in spring 2019.

This WHRPG system will consist of 10 waste heat recovery boilers that recover waste heat during the calcining stage of the cement production process, one unit of steam turbine generator and other components. Kawasaki will provide the overall plant design and engineering, waste heat recovery boilers, and a steam turbine generator, control equipment and other main elements of the system, and basic engineering for equipment to be procured by the client and technical advisory services for construction/commissioning. The installation of this WHRPG system to the plant will enable efficient utilization of waste heat, which was previously emitted into the outside air, and produce about 30% of the power needed by the plant, which would be equivalent to reducing CO2 emissions by about 170,000 tons annually.

Kawasaki installed its first WHRPG system for cement plant in 1980 in Japan, and established a joint venture in China to provide integrated service of design, procurement and construction for such systems in 2006. Kawasaki has been a global leader in supplying WHRPG systems for cement plant. The company has gained a wealth of experience by delivering approximately 250 units in Japan and abroad. The company has completed three projects successfully in South Korea, and the recently awarded contract is a testimony to the company’s proven track record and technical capability.

As worldwide interest in global warming prevention measures continues to rise, demand is expected to continue growing in both advanced and developing nations for facilities and systems that save energy and reduce environmental loads, including WHRPG systems for cement plant. Kawasaki will proactively continue to develop and provide products that contribute toward energy conservation and environmental protection.
