Japan’s Largest Aboveground Full Containment LNG Tank Ordered

Tokyo, April 23, 2009 – Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. announced today that it has received an order for the construction of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) tank from Tokyo Gas Engineering Co., Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Tokyo Gas Co., Ltd. The LNG tank will be constructed at an LNG terminal located in Ishikari, Hokkaido.

The LNG terminal underwent soil improvement work beginning in August 2008. Hokkaido Gas Ishikari Co., Ltd will begin terminal operations in 2012. When completed, the prestressed concrete (PC) LNG storage tank, with a capacity of 180,000 m3, will be the largest aboveground full containment LNG tank in Japan.

Located in the Ishikari Bay New Port Area, the Ishikari LNG terminal is Hokkaido’s first LNG receiving terminal that can accommodate large vessels. It will receive, store, re-gasify and ship out LNG as well as supply natural gas throughout Hokkaido.

Since the delivery of its first underground LNG tank in 1982 a-nd aboveground tank in 1983, Kawasaki has outfitted Japan with every type of LNG tank on the market, including single/double/full containment tanks, in-pit tanks, as well as in-ground and underground membrane tanks. Kawasaki has also been involved in overseas LNG tank construction projects in Korea and Spain. To date, there are 26 Kawasaki-built LNG tanks in successful operation around the world.
